The Treasure in the Gravel: A Richmond Reunion

Posted by on

Working at Caring Transitions of Richmond is part labor of love and part treasure hunt. Because we work in such a wide variety of job sites and geographic settings across the Richmond area, every day brings a new environment and a new story. Perhaps the best part of our work is the opportunity to delight a client with an unexpected find from their home. We had one of those "hidden gem" moments recently.

Our team member, Kurt Butler, was working to sort and organize the contents of a home just south of Richmond. The house was packed full of items, as many of the homes we transition are. During one of Kurt's many trips in and out of the house—ferrying items destined for auction, donation, or disposal—he noticed a tiny glimmer in the gravel driveway.

Upon closer inspection, Kurt realized that buried just beneath the surface of the gravel and dirt was a gold ring! He immediately reached out to the family to let them know about the discovery.

The family was shocked when they heard the news. When Kurt brought the ring to them for inspection, the emotion in the room was palpable: the ring was a family heirloom. The family had long ago given up hope of ever seeing it again. Over 20 years prior, the ring had been stolen by a robber who broke into multiple homes in their neighborhood. The robber must have dropped this ring while fleeing the house and the ring apparently has been in the driveway for the last 20 years!

While we were thrilled to reunite the family with the ring, these discoveries are surprisingly common for the Caring Transitions team. Over the years, we have found rings, jewelry, and even cash tucked away in toolboxes, coat pockets, and hidden corners of attics.

This story is a great reminder of why we do what we do. It’s not just about packing boxes; it’s about honoring the memories and the "treasures" that make a house a home. We were honored to play a small part in returning a piece of family history to its rightful place.
