Treasure Under the Paperwork: The $34,000 Surprise Discovery!
One of the most rewarding parts of working at Caring Transitions of Greater Richmond is that we never truly know what a day will bring. Every home is a time capsule, and every closet holds the potential for a "hidden treasure" moment that changes a client's life.
Recently, our team member Erin experienced the find of a lifetime.
The "Golden" Moment
It was the final day of the project. The family had already removed all the items from the house they wanted. Erin was down to the last few piles when she spotted a nondescript, medium-sized metal file box buried under the bed.
Thinking it might contain interesting vintage documents for our auction, she pulled it toward her. Suddenly, the lid popped open, and the room seemed to get a lot brighter; the box was overflowing with stacks of $100 bills!
In the excitement of the discovery, the lid snapped shut and locked, turning the next hour into a high-stakes mission to get it back open.
The Big Reveal
To make sure the reveal was as exciting (and official) as possible, we brought in a locksmith and caught the whole thing on video. As the lid was pried open, the count began: nearly $34,000 in cash, much of it featuring the "big head" $100 bills from the 1980s and older, along with vintage passports and family records.
A Life-Changing Phone Call
Imagine getting a call telling you that a box of "junk" in your parent’s closet or under their bed contained a small fortune. The client was absolutely stunned. The family had no idea their parents had tucked this away decades ago.
